FAQ

General

Answer: The standard versions of the applications is free to use for anyone. The pro versions of the application are usable at different tariffs.

Answer: Because the application models run all calculations on the users side, no data needs to be up and downloaded. While it may seem like the browser is taking up- and downloads to the webpage, in reality the geotiff files provide by the users are parse and stored in user-machine memory. Thus, there is no reason to worry about data rights and confidentiality, as the webpage application servers never see any of your data, processing steps, simulations details or anything else. All that is known is the usage of the global datasets that are available for automatic download.

Answer: There are different elevation models used. In the standard version of the application only the STRM model (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shuttle_Radar_Topography_Mission is available.

In de pro version also the Copernicus and the Dutch AHN ( Actueel Hoogtebestand Nederland) model are available.

Answer: Expect the following memory requirements and compute time for various grid sizes:

  1. 1000x1000px 48 mb memory, 1 second compute
  2. 2500x2500px 300 mb memory, 5 second compute
  3. 10000x10000px 4.8 gb memory, 100 second compute
  4. 25000x25000px 30 gb memory, 1000 second compute

Answer

The Fast Flood model is the fastest flood simulation tool in the world, while keeping a high accuracy. The model has been tested and verified in fluvial, pluvial, urban, flash or coastal flood scenarios, and reaches accuracies near identical to full traditional simulation tools. The reason this tool is so fast is because it features 2 methods, the rapid Fast Flood method, and a full traditional flood solver (1D-2D regular grid Shallow water equations solver). Also because of these features, the model is not applicable for some scenario’s such as circular spread of flood waters in flat floodplains due to the intrinsic nature of the model. However, these key features of the model bring superfast simulation speeds (as can be seen at “How long does it take to run a simulation?”), which was the purpose when developing the tool.
